Police attack progressive students' protest rally at Shahbagh,

Allegations have been surfaced that police on Sunday (August 7) launched a provocative attack on a demonstration organised by the progressive student organisations at Shahbagh in the capital in protest against price hike of fuel oils.

However, police have claimed that activists of the student organisations launched attack on police. Several persons of both sides were injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, progressive students organisations have announced to bring out a procession from Madhu's Canteen at Dhaka University at 12 noon on Monday protesting the attack by police.

Witnesses said the progressive student organisations wanted to stage a sit-in at Shahbagh intersection after bringing out a procession from TSC of Dhaka University at about 6:00pm on Sunday. During the rally, some activists of the organisations locked in an altercation when police asked them to leave the place immediately.

Just at that time, policemen led by Ramna Zone's ADC Harun-ar-Rashid appeared at the place. They suddenly started charging batons and physically assaulting the activists of the student organisations. At the same time, brickbats were thrown at the police from the procession of the progressive student organisations.

Several police sources said Ramna Police Station's AC Bayezid and Shahbagh Police Station's SI Rashed were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, progressive student organisations claimed that 20 activists of them including Samajtantrik Chhatra Front's office secretary Salman Siddiqui, activists Mashiur Rahman, Mishal Tripura, Jabir, Biplobi Chhatra Moitree's Ahmed Juber, Sami Abdullah, Chhatra Union's Dhaka city organiser Shahadat Hossain, Jawad Hossain and Shanta were injured in the police attack.

Later, they were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment.
